Federal Voting Assistance Program
On Tuesday, June 8th Georgia will hold a special general runoff election to fill the Congressional vacancy left by the resignation of Congressman Nathan Deal of the 9th District. The following counties are included in the 9th Congressional District: parts of Catoosa, Dade, Dawson, Fannin, Forsyth, Gilmer, Gordon, Hall, Lumpkin, Murray, Pickens, Union, Walker, White, and Whitfield Counties.
On May 11, Georgia held the Special Election for 9th Congressional District. At that time, voters were sent a special State Write-in Absentee Ballot (along with the regular ballot for the first Special Election) in case a run-off election was needed. A run-off election is now needed, and the candidates are:
• Tom Graves, Republican
• Lee Hawkins, Republican
You can use that state write-in ballot you received for the May 11 election if you still have it, or you can use the Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot (FWAB). Complete and return the FWAB as soon as possible; this is a very compressed election timeline and time is already very short. The form and instructions on completing the FWAB are available at www.fvap.gov.
The FWAB must be postmarked no later than June 8, 2010, and received by the local election official no later than June 11, 2010. Send your FWAB to your County Election Official (contact information listed below).
The registration deadline has already passed, so if you are not already registered, it is too late to participate in this election. If you are already registered and have not yet requested an absentee ballot (or are unsure if you have requested one, or if your delivery address has changed since you last requested one), the ballot request deadline is June 4, 2010. Note that the date does not take into account mail delivery times required to receive and return your ballot by Election Day. Because of that, it is very unlikely that there is time for you to submit the FPCA, receive the ballot from election official, and then return your voted ballot back to the election official.
But you can submit the FPCA, and then immediately follow that up with a FWAB to serve as your ballot.
You may fax or email your request for an absentee ballot. It is recommended that you fax or email the form directly to your local election official (fax numbers can be found on the Georgia Elections Division website at http://www.sos.ga.gov/Elections/).
But Georgia does not allow faxing or emailing of the blank ballot to you or the voted ballot back from you. Therefore, FVAP highly recommends you use the FWAB as your ballot. As stated above, you can send in the FPCA to serve as your absentee ballot request, and then immediately complete and send in a FWAB to vote in this election.
If you live in one of the 9th District Counties, you can mail your FWAB and other materials directly to your local election official. Their contact information is below.
